This recording contains completely original music for flute written over the course of 1997 and 1998. Our intention was to create original works that employed the extremely broad range of tonal colors that the flute is capable of producing. Nothing written is intended to be "gimmicky," academic, or part of any existing school of composition. The object behind every new work is to capture real life moods by tapping into the exclusive properties of each instrument. Ikhofi Dance, for example, utilizes the wonderful and rarely used high range of the bass flute. The duo Paranoia actually expands the standard range of the C soprano flute with a strongly resounding E subtone, allowing for the first four-octave leap for C soprano flute in recorded history. Such contemporary techniques, however, are meant to enhance the music, not to create it. Our ultimate goal in the creation of this CD is to introduce the listener to the unknown and unlimited capacities of the flute, while remaining both engaging and approachable to you, the audience - musicians and non-musicians alike. |
